Blower Door Testing

Blower door testing measures how much air is leaking from a building through unsealed gaps, cracks, and penetrations in the envelope. It’s a key requirement for verifying compliance with energy codes that promote tighter, more efficient, and better-controlled buildings.

The test works by pressurizing or depressurizing the structure to quantify total air leakage. This data determines whether the building meets the required leakage threshold for code compliance and offers valuable insight into the home’s overall energy performance.

Beyond code compliance for new construction, blower door testing is also required—or strongly recommended—for high-performance building certifications such as LEED, Passive House, ENERGY STAR for Buildings, Zero Energy Ready Home, NGBS, and Green Star, among others. It’s also a critical component of accurate HVAC load calculations and is widely used during comprehensive energy audits.

More than 30 years ago, our house was built without a dryer vent. We quickly discovered this, but the makeshift vent we had installed can only be described as janky. We called The Vent Guys as our dryer was not drying the clothes properly. Jackson arrived and inspected the system. It could not be cleaned as a repair was needed. The cost was $129 for inspection, photos, video & travel.Jackson returned and replaced the air vent with a dryer jack vent and cleaned the system. The cost was $899 for repairs, cleaning, travel, video and photos.Jackson was extremely easy to work with and had great communication skills. He arrived on time and is very detailed in his documentation.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a service, repair, or installation at my home done with more professionalism and transparency as I experienced today with Lucas. He identified the problem, explained what he would do to remedy it, and set about doing that efficiently. He took photographs, described what they revealed, a clogged dryer vent that was impeding air flow drastically.
